webphoto1webphoto2By popular request, Sierra Wave asked Dennis Mattinson to tell us about the webcams in southern Inyo.  Here are the story and some beautiful images:
Dennis Mattinson worked with Steve Cosner from the Mt. Whitney Hikers Association on placing a webcam at the Fort Independence EPA Office. We created the Mt Williamson (and its sister Mt Whitney webcam at the Lone Pine Film History Museum) to give people a live view of the Sierra crest, and to help create interest in the Mt Whitney Hikers Association website and forum at whitneyzone.com. The cameras are run by donated computers, using old Olympus digital cameras, housed in custom built electrical junction boxes. They were installed by volunteers, and most operations on the camera can be managed remotely over the internet.
