A broken fire-prevention sprinkler system pipe Friday caused thousands of gallons of water to flood and thus close Mammoth Lakes Library.

The trouble began about 2:30 p.m. the day after Christmas, Anna Danielson, senior librarian, said. Danielson said the main pipe to the building’s sprinkler system broke and started flooding the library from the second floor.

About 12 to 20 people were in the library at the time of the flood, Danielson said; there were no injuries. The four-inch pipe leaked for about 20 minutes, and initial estimates were that 5,000 to 8,000 gallons of water flooded the library, which moved into its new location in January of this year.

A few books were damaged, Danielson said, but structural damage was the main concern.

The library will be closed for several days and will most likely not re-open until the week of Jan. 5.
