"Willem and the Whales" tells the story of a boy's view of whaling.

Films to inspire environmental activism, and theater to bring back holiday memories – the Mono Council for the Arts let us know about December events.

First, the SYRCL’s  Wild and Scenic Film Festival, famous for the major showing of films in Nevada City, California, and for traveling with the film festival to many parts of the country.  In our area, Friends of the Inyo will host the Wild and Scenic Film Festival at three locations.

In Mammoth Lakes at the Edison Theatre Friday night (tonight) and Bishop’s Cerro Coso College Saturday night.  Both festivals start at 7 pm.  The Lone Pine Film Museum will host the festival next Thursday night at 7pm.  Friends of the Inyo added that you can also enjoy beer, wine, snacks and raffle prizes at the festival.

Some of the film titles are A Skier’s Journey, The Majestic Plastic Bag, Crossroads, The Fishman and Willem & The Whales.  A raffle entry is included with your $10 ticket purchase at the door.

On stage December 8th through the 18th at Edison Theatre watch a live radio play of It’s A Wonderful Life, made famous in the movie of the same name, starring Jimmy Stewart.  The screenplay was adapted for radio by Tony Palermo and will appear on stage in Mammoth Lakes.  You can call for show tickets and ask about group rates – (760) 934-6592.  Showtimes are Thursday through Saturdays, 7pm and Sunday, 4pm. The Mammoth Lakes Repertory Theatre and Mammoth Lakes Foundation present this special holiday production.

In March, the 2012 Spring Community Theatre will present Hello, Dolly.  Auditions take place Saturday, December 3rd at 1:30pm at the Neighborhood Church in Bishop.  This is a general open audition that requires a 90 second accompanied song, pre-recorded or live.  A special dance only parts audition will take place Sunday, December 4th.  The general cast list will be posted Sunday evening.  Monday, December 5th, the first cast meeting will take place at 7pm at Bishop Union High School.
