UPDATE: from Eastern Sierra Nordic Ski Association, Mon. 3-19:

Biathlon Minus Five

Yee Haw! The weekend storm dropped three feet of wonderful snow here at our house in town and up to five feet on Mammoth Mountain. Conditions are going to be perfect for the Fifth Annual Mammoth Winter Biathlon.

Last year we had four elite biathletes who were competing on the national and international level. This year, so far, we will have thirteen elite athletes instructing at the Friday clinics and racing in the Elite race on Sunday. Sunday, we’re going to have a biathlon race not to be missed.

Biathlon range survey is today, and range build is tomorrow. Range and course will be ready for a Biathlon Celebration Saturday and Sunday.

Remember, registration for both Friday clinics and the biathlon closes at midnight Tuesday, 20 March. This is your final notice. Register now before it’s too late. http://www.active.com/skiing/mammoth-lakes-ca/mammoth-winter-biathlon-2012

Andrea Mead Lawrence: The spirit of sport is really the essence and ideal of all our human efforts. It is the exercising and joining of our individual energy with those of others in furthering the human race. Thus, competition strikes me as being for one another, not against. I see it as participation, an unusual teamwork. Each contribution of spiritual and physical vitality establishes new plateaus from which others may thrust. It is a shared current; it is important to play well.
UPDATE: From founder of Winter Biathlon, Mike Karch:

We are growing….last year we had four…so far, we are up to 13 elite athletes competing.

Thank you Charlie Comfort and Tom Cage for your generosity and making this happen.

Finally, Eastern Sierra Nordic Ski Association has $500 stipends for elite athlete airfare.  During the event on Saturday or Sunday, please go to the ESNSA tent and ask for Katie Quinlan. Please bring your flight receipts as well as travel food receipts. Katie will cut you a check for these as well as $70 to refund your for signing up on active.com.
