Into the Woods is not as well-known as most of the musicals that Playhouse 395 has presented such as Hello Dolly, Chicago or Mary Poppins, which will provide an element of surprise to theater-goers unfamiliar with this story of intertwining fairytales, heart-felt wishes, and the power of the human spirit.

Today in Bishop, actors are polishing their solos and choral numbers, the orchestra is fine-tuning their accompaniment, and final touches are being made to one of the finest sets Playhouse has yet to create. The magical woodland setting will help transport theater-goers into the heart of the fairytale story, where the cast of familiar fairytale characters and woodland animals, bedecked in fabulously original costumes, will perform the enchanting and complex score of Into the Woods.

Many themes are explored throughout the play, always reminding audiences that ‘Anything can Happen in the Woods.’ In Act I we watch the main characters desperately searching for a cape as red as blood, a slipper as pure as gold, hair as yellow as corn and a cow as white as milk. These desired items and other heartfelt wishes are successfully fulfilled by the end of the Act, only to have Act II fully explore the theme of ‘Be Careful What You Wish For.’ One of the most moving and memorable of songs, ‘No One is Alone”, serves to remind us that we are not alone in this unstable world, and there is always a glimmer of hope.
