Mariela Rios with baby

Mariela Rios with baby Shaylie

There will be a yard sale starting a 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 8 at 1436 Rocking W. Drive in Bishop to help cancer patient Mariela Rios and her family.

Rios, who is 18 years old, was recently diagnosed with ostersarcoma and is currently in Loma Linda Medical Center for treatment. Shortly after her diagnosis, she gave birth to a baby girl, Shaylie Ariel Vanvelzer. Rios’ older sister has postponed college to care for her. The Rios family, faced with expenses beyond their means, are making several trips down to Southern California and the family is caring for the infant.

The yard sale will include household items, clothes, furniture, homemade tamales and salsa, as well as free coffee.

If you are unable to contribute items for the yard sale or attend, please consider a money donation to the family to help them through this difficult time. A very young mother and a new baby deserve our community’s best efforts. For more information on the yard sale or to make a contribution, please contact Marta Jimenez at (760) 937-6129.
