Rising Gas PricesIn the face of potential municipal bankruptcy, an attack on its water by LADWP, a loss of jobs at Mammoth Mountain and the newest rough news – closure of June Mountain, Mammoth Lakes Tourism issued at least a smidgen of good news – gas prices in Southern California have dropped and visitor numbers are up in Mammoth.

The press release says that “As reported in the LA Times, Southern California gas prices have been dropping dramatically.  The third straight week of double-digit price declines have dropped the average price for a gallon of regular gas to under $4.”  The release quotes the Auto Club that the average gas prices are within a penny of what most of the region was paying for fuel last year.

The Auto Club also says that July 4th traveler numbers may go up over last year as a result.  The Tourism Department said that the average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the LA-Long Beach area is $3.92 per gallon which is 13.2 cents less than last week and 44 cents lower than last month.

Tourism Director John Urdi said that occupancy numbers for this summer are running higher than previous years and the lower gas prices will help.  In the face of a low snow winter, Mammoth businesses are promoting what they call “The Best Summer Ever” campaign.  So, even a bit of good summer news helps against the long list of troubles.
