Eastern California Museum is Open Over Labor Day Weekend   (Press Release)

The Eastern California Museum in Independence will be open to the public during the entire Labor Day Weekend, from Friday Aug. 31 through Monday, Sept. 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Museum is currently showing its latest exhibit, Personal Responsibility: The Camp Photographs of Toyo Miyatake. The exhibit features more than 70 black-and-white photographs of daily life at the Manzanar War Relocation Center, shot by Miyatake, who was a renowned photographer before WW II, and was interned at Manzanar during the war.

The exhibit has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Rafu Shimpo (the LA area Japanese American daily newspaper), and by the California Travel and Tourism Commission.

The museum also features the acclaimed Anna and OK Kelley Gallery of Native American Life, which showcases more than 400 Paiute-Shoshone baskets and other artifacts, permanent exhibits on the WW II Manzanar Relocation Center, pioneering climber Norman Clyde, the Los Angeles Aqueduct, and early life in the Owens Valley and the Eastern Sierra.

The Museum Bookstore has recently undergone a small renovation, and has expanded the number and type of books and gifts for sale. The Museum’s webpage was also recently upgraded, and now contains more than 200 historic photos.

The Eastern California Museum and bookstores is located at 155 N. Grant Street, three blocks west of the historic courthouse in Independence, and is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days a week. Call the museum at 760-878-0258 for more information, or check the museum webpage at www.inyocounty.us/ecmuseum.
