High school winners.

The Inyo County Spelling Bee produced lots of winners. Kevin Sprague of Bishop High School won first place in the high school division when he correctly spelled “blitzkrieg”. Round Valley’s Tenaya Morelock won first place in the elementary middle school competition when she spelled “legalese.”

Elementary/middle school winners with Mary Franke in center place.

Superintendent of Schools Terry McAteer and Assistant Superintendent Pamela Jones hosted the event with organizational assistance from Sandy Smith.

Spellers and families enjoyed a special treat. Mary Franke, former teacher and vice principal of Bishop High School, initiated spelling competition in Bishop 35 years ago. Officials invited Mary to join them on stage to hand out awards.

High School winners: Kevin Sprague of Bishop, 1st place. Evelen Nunez, Owens Valley, 2nd place. Kaitlynn Barlow, Big Pine, 3rd place. Matthew Ono, Bishop, 4th place. Elizabeth Nunez, Owens Valley, 5th place.

Elementary/ middle school winners: Tenaya Morelock, Round Valley, 1st place. Olivia Grah, Bishop, 2nd place. Logan Stephenson, Round Valley, 3rd place. Noah Keathley, Adventist Christian, 4th place. Brian Hambleton, Big Pine, 5th place.
