Caltrans Annual Litter Pickup Day
Inyo & Mono Counties – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has scheduled a statewide effort to raise the public’s awareness and prevent littering. Caltrans District 9 maintenance crews will be picking up trash along the district’s roadways on Thursday, April 25, 2013.
Last year, the California Department of Transportation spent $43 million to pick up and dispose of trash that was tossed or dumped onto California’s roadways. Crews picked up 2,469 cubic yards of litter which equals enough trash statewide to fill more than 158 garbage trucks. Cigarette butts are the number one item discarded on the state’s highways. They cause roadside fires, clog storm drains and threaten water quality.
In addition to not throwing trash out on our roadways the public can help by participating in the Caltrans Adopt-A-Highway Program. The Adopt-A-Highway Program allows the public to adopt sections of highway for beautification projects, such as litter removal, vegetation control, graffiti removal, and tree and shrub planting. The AAH Program participants picked up nearly 104,000 bags of trash from California’s roadsides – enough to fill nearly 1,000 garbage trucks. Due to the efforts of the volunteers of this program California’s taxpayers saved an estimated $11.5 million value in litter removal costs last fiscal year.

WORKER’S MEMORIAL
PAYS TRIBUTE TO 178 EMPLOYEES
Caltrans’ 23rd annual ceremony honors employees who have died in the line of duty
Bishop – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will hold its annual Workers’ Memorial Ceremony on Tuesday, April 30th at 11:00 a.m. at the Caltrans District 9 Office. This ceremony will be held in coordination with Caltrans Safety Awareness Week. Caltrans would like to invite the public to attend.
The Highway Workers Memorial is a time to remember employees who have lost their lives building, maintaining, and operating California’s world-class transportation system. Since 1924, a total of 178 Caltrans workers have died in the line of duty. The ceremony will be held in front of the Caltrans District Office located at 500 S. Main Street, Bishop.
This ceremony will feature a temporary memorial of 19 orange safety cones, 7 to honor each of District 9’s fallen Caltrans maintenance workers and 12 representing the Districts around the state to honor the Caltrans maintenance workers who have lost their lives.
Speakers will include Tom Hallenbeck, Caltrans District 9 Director and Captain Andria Witmer, California Highway Patrol. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8988 representative Bob Waggoner along with the VFW Color Guard will be in attendance, and Caltrans employee Barbara Cote will perform a violin solo.
While Caltrans maintenance workers place memorial ribbons on each of the cones to memorialize the fallen employees who made the ultimate sacrifice, Rick Mitchell will perform a special bagpipe tribute. For more on honoring fallen workers – http://complianceandsafety.
If you could make money Whining, some of you would be rich! Day in, day out, whine, whine, whine.
What are you whining about BobK?
Limbaugh made them do it. He drives them nuts. I never listen to the guy but I owe him a debt of thanks for being the cause of so many hilariously overwrought and frequently irrelevant bleats, which are fun diversions from serious adult things.
PS
Not all the slobs are out of towners.
@ “Not all the slobs are out of towners.”
True.
But the most alarming thing is:
Man is the only animal that knowingly poisons its own drinking water.
Nothing like a bunch of loud, foul mouthed, drunken, cigar smoking”sportsmen” shouting at each how “beautiful it is up here” then leaving a mountain of trash on the shore when they depart. I used to take a trash bag fishing with me to try to keep ahead of them but… Read more »

“The real enemies of the radical environmental leadership are capitalism & the American way of life.”

These so-called conservatives have clearly gone insane.
Just what is it they claim they are conserving?
Funny, your acting like Mr Limbaugh’s rants are new.Like he is some kind of new phenom. Your not building your case quoting someone who peaked 20 yrs ago. With satellite radio, perhaps you should update your quotations. Satellite radio…..ever heard of it?
you forgot ‘teabaggers, rightwingers, neocon” shall I go on? There is plenty of name calling going on from both sides.
@Tony Cumia,
Glad to see you TOO are sick to death of the main cause of unnecessary division in the country.
It goes way beyond name-calling. It’s become an entire cultural thing.
Ask yourself, “Where did it all start?”
And be brutally honest, please.
I remember Sam Donaldson rolling his eyes as he’ interviewed”President Reagan, I remember Katie Couric Rolling her eyes and shaking her head as she ‘interviewed’ Casper Wienberger. Hell, Mr Cronkite was famous for backhanded remarks after he ‘interviewed’ someone he didnt agree with decades before Rush ever touched touched a… Read more »

You can take the word “fishermen and fishing line” out of the sentence, and you get the same thing …year around…yet so many are open to the idea of opening up more of the land to the public for ATV’s,motorcycles, off road vehicles, etc.THOSE types are much worse than fishermen as far as… Read more »

and you can thank the fishermen for polluting our lakes and streams with empty bait containers and fishing line.
yes, that zoo is about to start all over again come the end of the month.
People pick up your own damn trash!
You bring up an interesting albeit sadly true fact of life about fishermen Mark. After the onslaught of fisherman from the south, the cigarette butts, fishing line, beer cans, plastic wrappers and bags, … you name it, remain for the wildlife to choke on and for we locals to get… Read more »

The phenomenon of non-locals trashing our pristine environment will always be with us as long as tourism is the only source of economic growth.
“Cigarette butts are the number one item discarded on the state’s highways. They cause roadside fires, clog storm drains and threaten water quality.” And also SoCal beaches. No one moves from a beach community for that reason. At least be honest.
You are right. That was only one of the reasons. And primarily, all the reasons were generated by too many people. That’s why I like Mammoth. It may seem crowded at times but compared to SoCal it’s nothing.
You moved away from the beach for the same reason everybody else moves away …
too many effing people.
Nah. What really happens is you find ways to block beach access including fencing off public access routes owned by the state, put up no trespassing signs everywhere, hire private security to harass beach users, pay off the local sheriffs so they challenge legitimate beach users and threaten them with… Read more »
