While two Mammoth councilmen wrangle over a contract to hire Steve Searles to manage bears, two other councilmembers focus on a bear management plan. Town Manager Rob Clark seems to think the two will not conflict.bears-in-campgrounds.jpg

Clark said that the Town Council Wildlife Committee came up with a comprehensive plan – education, outreach and work with Steve Searles if his contract is approved. The committee includes Clark, Police Chief Randy Schienle and Council Members Wendi Sugimura and Skip Harvey.

Clark said the plan went to Bruce Kinney of the Department of Fish and Game. Once the plan goes into final form, the Town will circulate it. The Town Manager said there is an interagency group to work with so not to duplicate efforts. Clark said he believes Fish and Game's involvement will probably include preparation of educational materials.

As for a contract with Searles, Clark said the contract was not ready for a vote last week and will appear on future council agendas.
