Warren Street Improvement Project

You may have heard already about the major improvement project that will greatly benefit our City’s downtown core.  For many months, City of Bishop Public Works Department has been working with a volunteer focus group to help shape the look and feel of the project and the Bishop Chamber has been actively involved.
In an effort to bring more attention to the project, and to solicit more input from area businesses and residents, we’re hosting a mixer on Warren Street.

Three seats are currently up for election on the Bishop City Council and there are five candidates vying for those positions.  The Bishop Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau is partnering with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary to host a Candidate Forum so that you can get to know each contestant better before casting your vote on November 6th.

WorkAbility Program

WorkAbility is a win-win-win program helping to place high school students with employers for on-the-job training.  Thanks to Federal grant funding, local businesses get the opportunity to help special education students at little or no cost to the empolyer.  The grant pays wages, benefits and workmen’s cost insurance; businesses provide training and mentorship.

Too often students in special education do not develop job skills to help them transition to postsecondary life. The WorkAbility program provides pre-employment training, placement, and follow-up for high school students in special education who are making the transition from school to work, independent living, and post-secondary education or training.

According to program director Tanya Zaleschuk, BUHS is hoping to place 30-40 WorkAbility students with small business employers in Bishop this year.  Ms. Zaleschuk attempts to place students in job sites that best match post-secondary interests.  The ultimate goal of WorkAbility is for students to gain skills and become so proficient that employers hire them as their own valued employee.

For more information, please contact Tanya Zaleschuk(760)872-5135 or email [email protected].

Christmas Is Just Around the Corner!

We realize that it’s only October, but believe it or not, Bishop Chamber staff is already busy preparing for our town’s fun & festive Christmas events!  The annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Streets of Lights Party are slated for Friday evening, December 7th.  Be sure to pick up your Streets of Lights map and enter the raffle for dozens of great prizes and $500!

The ever-popular Christmas Parade will be Saturday, December 8th.  We are also finalizing plans for the annual holiday mixer and home & business decorating contest.

The 2012 Chamber-sponsored holiday festivities will celebrate the theme “Hooked on Christmas” and we’re hoping that everyone has fun decorating and preparing parade entries to fit the fishing theme.

New “Feed our Fish” Program Puts
Lunkers in Lakes!

A few months back, the Bishop Chamber launched the new “Feed our Fish” program and it’s going remarkably well!
The concept is straightforward – we are asking people who believe that trout fishing is important to contribute funds that we use to purchase and plant Alpers Trout.  So far, we have received nearly $3,000 – the first load of fish were planted the lakes & streams of Bishop Creek Canyon last month and another load will be delivered later this week!
To date, twenty-nine individuals and businesses have contributed $10 to $250 each.  Many local artists donated beautiful works of art for an auction that was held during the press reception and proceeds were added to the fish fund.

“We hope to keep the program going year-round, stocking Bishop Creek Canyon during the summer and Pleasant Valley Reservoir and Lower Owens River in the winter,”
explains Tawni Thomson.  “Of course, we’ll need some more help from people that believe in the importance of fishing here in the Eastern Sierra and any contribution would be greatly appreciated.”

If you would like to become a “Feed our Fish” sponsor, pleaseview the flyer or give Tawni a call at (760)873-8405.
