League champion Sam Johnson led the Bishop Union High JV Mathletes to the Desert Interscholastic Mathetmatics League title, the fifth straight championship for Bishop.

The Bishop JV Mathletes won three of four league meets, including the finale Feb. 16 at Desert High School.

Bishop’s Johnson, a freshmen, was first out of 102 mathletes. Teammate Justin Gilpin finished in sixth place, followed by McKenna Cortez, Caitlyn Vargas, Christiana McClean, Madi Taylor, Melodie Aust, Laura Stickells and Paige Sills.

Mathletes competition consists of 10 individual problems and one team problem. Bishop had 124 points, followed by Tehachapi (108), Desert Christian-Lancaster (106), Rosamond (97), Silver Valley (91), Desert (87), Kern Valley (85), Boron (80), Antelope Valley Christian (70), Lone Pine (65) and Trona (45).

Bishop has won the DIML championship 10 times in the past 14 years.

Bob Siefken, Bishop JV Mathlete coach for the past eight seasons, offered thanks to parents Wade Taylor, Peter Stickells and Kristi Boxley; and to David French and Tracey Taylor.

Siefken also gave special recognition to Joy Straub, Home Street Middle School math teacher; all but one member of this year’s JV team are products of Mrs. Straub’s Math Counts program.
