mcsoOn Wednesday, July 25, the Mono County Sheriff Search and Rescue (SAR) Team responded in aid of a boy scout who had severe abdominal pain while hiking on the John Muir Trail, west of Duck Lake in Fresno County, near the Mono County/Fresno County border.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office sent their helicopter, Eagle One, to the area to attempt to locate and extract the Boy Scout from the backcountry.  The helicopter was able to locate the Boy Scout’s party, but was unable to pick up him up due to approaching darkness and the lack of nearby landing zones.  The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office requested the help of the Mono County Sheriff Search and Rescue (SAR) Team.

A ground team was sent late Wednesday night to hike over Duck Pass to the Boy Scout’s location to obtain better information concerning his medical condition and prepare for his rescue.  On Thursday morning, a winch equipped California Highway Patrol helicopter was able to lower a cable from their hoist to the ground team.  The Boy Scout was then hoisted approximately 100-feet to the hovering helicopter.  He was taken to Fresno Airport for transfer to a waiting ambulance.
