Mammoth Mountain Ski Area can claim a first – the first resort in California to open for the winter ski season. Opening Day was Thursday, November 8th. Enthusiasm at the Mountain is high, but snow cover remained scant, provided by natural and manmade snow.

The Mountain sent out live video via satellite to our KSRW TV33 and to many TV stations in the Los Angeles area. The images show Broadway Express with a cover, but not much on either side. Grooming caterpillars worked the slopes.

Crews have continued to crank up the snow-making gear when temperatures have allowed.

Ski Area spokesmen said that Broadway Express would open at 8:30 Thursday morning with service to the Broadway trail. They say that skiers and riders can enjoy an 8 to 14 inch base of natural and manmade snow.

The Opening Day Celebration takes place Saturday, November 10th with a champagne toast and live entertainment at the Main Lodge.
