If ice Fishing or back country spring skiing sound like a good idea this weekend, it looks like many of the paved roads into the Sierra will be open to provide access.

Bob Brown with the Inyo County Road Department reports that the boulder on the Whitney Portal Road has been blaste,d and that road is now open all the way. Onion Valley to Kearsarge Pass is plowed out and open. Horseshoe Meadows is now said to be closed.

Big Pine Creek to the Glacier Lodge has been open for a while now, and Brown reports that the road to South Lake is now plowed out all the way though the parking lot might not be plowed or melted out yet.

The road to Sabrina is open and ready to go, according to Caltrans.

In Mono County, Public Works staff reports that Rock Creek is open as far as the plow crews normally go. Lundy Canyon is done as is the Virginia Lakes road.

There was hope that the Tioga Pass road would be opened as far as the gate at the top this weekend, but Susan Lent with Caltrans reports that the drifts were deeper than expected and it could be another two weeks until this road opens to the top. Plowing wont start on the west side until May first.
