Could the remote town of Darwin come to life in a big way? If mining resumed in a serious way, the answer could be, yes. Inyo officials say the possibility of renewed mining will come up at the December 5th Planning Commission meeting.

Inyo Planning
Director Pat Cecil says that the California Environmental Quality Act
process will begin toward the re-opening of a mine in Darwin. Cecil explained that
with metal prices up, there are plans in the works to re-open the
silver and zinc mine above the town of Darwin in the Inyo Mountains. If
the mine does re-open, as many as 37 trucks a day could potentially
drive ore across Death Valley to mills in Nevada.

Cecil says that the hard rock mine is in good shape and could provide
jobs to the area. If the Darwin Mine does re-open only a few jobs would
be created at first, but Cecil says that as many as 70-100 people could
be hired if the mine gears up for full production.

The remote town of Darwin was established years ago because of an active mine that eventually closed.
