Chinese food fans waited with anticipation as serious renovation work took place at the old Western Kitchen in Bishop – a project to make way for a new location for the long-established Imperial Gourmet.

The popular Chinese eatery has struggled under inscrutable lease issues at Bishop’s Cottonwood Plaza, along with other tenants there.

Many businesses have moved out and others have hired lawyers.

At the City of Bishop, Gary Schley in Public Works said that the Imperial Gourmet plans include partial demolition of the previous Western Kitchen.

Schley said this project is considered a remodel because it will maintain the same square footage as the previous building, but plans do include a brand new kitchen, upgraded bathrooms and a new dining area.

Plans also include parking and paving. Although Schley did not offer a definite work schedule, he said they are “moving fast.”
