On Sunday, Bishop Police and Symons Ambulance responded to a mobile home community on Sierra Street in Bishop after a 66 year sierra_street_mobile_parkold man shot himself. Neighbors heard the sad news today that the man had died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound to the stomach.

The 911 call reportedly came in at about 2:00 Sunday afternoon. Despite the work of the ambulance crew and the medical attention that included an operation on the wound, the man was pronounced dead at Northern Inyo Hospital at 2:51 pm.

Suicide is not unknown in the Eastern Sierra. Mono Health officials report that on average one person takes his or her own life in Mono County per year. Inyo County averages two to three per year.

The Mental Health Departments in Mono and Inyo Counties are always available to help. Monday through Friday during business hours, you can call the Mono Health Department at 924-5510 or Inyo County at 873-6533. After hours or anytime, you can call 911. The dispatchers will put you in touch with people who can help.
