mt._whitneyInyo County Sheriff officials report that a 63-year-old woman has died on Mt. Whitney.

Carma Roper with the Sheriffs Department says that Inyo County Search and Rescue received a call at about 2:00 am Friday regarding a fatality on Mt. Whitney. Rescuers, assisted by the China Lake Mountain Rescue Group, used a wheeled litter to carry the female victim down the Mt. Whitney trail.

The victim was identified as a 63-year-old woman from Sunnyvale California. The name of the victim was being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Details on what led to the fatality were not available at last word. There were unconfirmed reports that the victim did not suffer a traumatic accident like a fall, but had instead succumbed after a medical emergency.

Additional details will be posted as they are available.

Update Monday August 2, 4:20 PM: The victim has been identified as Allyson Kumataka, of Sunnyvale. The cause of death is listed as a pre-exisitng medical condition.
