After six straight losses to start the season, the Mammoth High football team earned its firstwin with a dominating performance.
Jose Cortez scored three touchdowns to lead the Huskies to a 42-0 Desert Mountain League victoryat Lucerne Valley.
Mammoth (1-6 overall, 1-1 in league) led 21-0 after the first quarter and rolled to the victory, a great turnaround after last week’s last-minute loss to Silver Valley.
The new-look Mammoth Huskies had several players see some of their first action this season, including Garrett James andMiguel Herrera, while depleted Lucerne Valley (1-6, 0-2) suffered more injuries to an already undermanned squad.
Cortez had 254 yards rushing on 21 carrries, including TD runs of 79 and 54 yards.
Mammoth’s Casey Baviera, Lane Jacobsen, Micheal Hartlessand Lopez led a staunch defensive effort. Lucerne Valley had three drives inside the Mammoth 10-yard but two fumbles helped keep the Mustangs scoreless.
Lopez scored two touchdowns and Baviera had the other for the Huskies.
Many players contributed to the victory, including Eddie Diaz, Kenden Blake, Dalton Morley, Greg Bretz, Nick Escallier, Jose Toledo, Scott Somers,Zach Harrisand Billy Rossi.
The Huskies kept their playoff hopes alive with the convincing win. Mammoth hosts Desert Christian of Lancaster in DML action on Halloween at Gault-McClure Stadium.
