Inyo Council for the Arts announces the 11th annual Inyo County Poetry Out Loud! This exciting nationalpoetry recitation competition will be at 6pm on Wednesday, February 5th, in the ICA theater at 137 South Main Street, Bishop. Students from Bishop Union, Owens Valley, and Palisade Glacier high schools will compete for the title of Inyo County Champion and advancement to the California Poetry Out Loud contest in March in Sacramento. The California Champion will advance to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals on April 27-29th in Washington, DC, where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be distributed.
The competition, presented in partnership with the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry – both classic and contemporary – through memorization, performance, and
competition. Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 3.8 million students and 60,000 teachers from 16,000 schools in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.
