We love our pets, and the local group that knows this and works for animal welfare has news.

ICARE – Inyo County Animal Resources & Education – gave us a heads up on a special Oprah Winfrey Show. Friday, Oprah will look into puppy mills, according to ICARE members.

The story uncovers serious consequences of pet over-population and abuses. ICARE passed along a website for more information. Stoppuppymills.org.

ICARE’s own news – the 12th Annual Fundraiser. Saturday, April 19th at 6pm at the Tri-County Fairgrounds. Dinner and special raffles. Tickets on ssale at Spellb inder Books or Radio shack in Bishop and The Booky Joint in Mammoth Lakes.

ICARE has funded over 6,100 spay/neuter surgeries in the past 10 years. This work has reduced Inyo Animal Shelter impounds by 50%. 1,164 in 1996 down to 579 in 2007.

ICARE’s promotions have increased pet adoptions by 280%. 82 in 1996 to 311 in 2007. Also, as a direct result of all of ICARE’s animal welfare programs, the number of cats and dogs euthanized at the animal shelter has dropped 96%. From 1,784 killed in 1995 down to 82 in 2007.
