Inyo Council for the Arts Awarded California Arts Council “Arts Education:
Extension” and “Local Impact” Grants State funds support After School Arts Education and “Community Art Days” across Inyo County

Press release

Inyo County CA – The California Arts Council announced its plans to award Inyo Council for the Arts (ICA) two new grants as part of its Arts Education: Extension and Local Impact programs.

Arts Education: As a segment of the California Arts Council Arts Education grant opportunities, Extension grants support arts education programs for PreK-12 students that operate after school and during the summer, on school sites, in artistic venues, and in community settings. The intention of the program is to offer young people sequential, hands-on training in artistic disciplines, including dance, literary arts, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts.

“The Arts Education Extension program capitalizes on the potential to create arts learning opportunities for California’s young people whenever and wherever possible,” said Nashormeh Lindo, California Arts Council Chair. “These projects allow for the positive impacts of arts engagement to continue undeterred.”

ICA will partner with Inyo County Probation Department to provide after school classes to high school students, to be held in the court school and community school in Bishop as well as other high schools in the Owen’s Valley. The classes will be open to all high school students and will provide an opportunity for arts-based learning.

ICA is one of 169 grantees chosen for the Arts Education: Extension program. To view a complete listing of all Arts Education Extension grantees, visit

Local Impact: The Local Impact program provides support for community-driven arts project for small and mid- sized arts organizations. The program fosters equity, access and opportunity in communities by cultivating community participation in art making, learning, and exposure.

ICA’s “Community Art Days” were a big success when they debuted in 2017. The next round of Art Days are tentatively scheduled to take place in October 2018 and May 2019. ICA will again partner with the County of Inyo to present these free events in public parks. Events will include hands-on art and craft activities, workshops in art, music, and dance, live music, community food vendors, artist booths, and
participation by a host of other Inyo County non-profit organizations.

Taking place in the communities of Lone Pine, Independence, Big Pine, and Bishop, ICA’s “Community Art Days” are an opportunity for Inyo County residents to participate in and appreciate high quality artistic activities and experiences!

“The Local Impact grant program strikes at the heart of the issue of access and equity in the arts,” said Nashormeh Lindo of the California Arts Council. “ICA’s project is crucial to help arts and culture opportunities reach California communities, and to promote the unique creative expressions within those communities.”

ICA is one of 133 grantees chosen for the Local Impact program. To view a complete listing of all Local Impact grantees, visit http://arts.ca.gov/programs/files/FY1718_ProjectDescriptions_LI.pdf.
