After 28 years with the Inyo Sheriff’s Department and as the current Under Sheriff, John Eropkin will retire at the end of this month.

Eropkin worked his way up through the department. He started as a reserve officer in 1978 and went full-time as the resident deputy in Big Pine in 1980. Eropkin worked narcotics enforcement, and then when Inyo Narcotics Enforcement Team was organized, he became the commander. He also worked as a detective and as the sergeant in charge of detectives and was a member of the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Team.

John Eropkin took on the job of Under Sheriff at the end of the term held by former Sheriff Dan Lucas and continued as Sheriff Bill Lutze’s Under Sheriff for the last two years.

Asked who would replace Eropkin, Sheriff Lutze said he has not made that decision and wouldn’t take any steps to do so until after Eropkin’s last day, December 29th.
