Playhouse 395’s production of Chicago opened last weekend to large crowds who were ‘wowed’ by the dancing, singing and costumes in this rendition of the popular musical.

The audience is welcomed to the play by the Master of Ceremonies who warns that they are about to see a story of “murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery – all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts.”  And thus begins three hours of pure entertainment filled with glitz, glamour and the performance of cherished songs.

The play stars Jennifer Collins in the role of celebrity criminal Velma Kelly; Danielle Kuhl as the manipulative ‘vaudeville wannabe’ Roxie Hart; and Ron Valenzuela as the unscrupulous lawyer Billy Flynn.  Along with Patricia Barton in the scheming role of Mama Morton, Stephen Christie as the pathos-filled Amos Hart, and Susan Kunze with her spunky interpretation of reporter Mary Sunshine, they will leave you laughing, crying and singing the songs they so passionately perform.

Directed by veteran Playhouse Director Martha Reynolds this play is the most complex and challenging endeavor Playhouse has taken on.  There are numerous intricate, impossibly difficult and dazzling dance numbers choreographed by Gigi deJong and assistant Jose Pizana.

Vocal Director Diana Lanane and orchestra director Mark Hatter bring forth the fabulous music that theater goers will be humming and singing for days and weeks to come……and All that Jazz!!

The costumes are, without a doubt, one of the most unforgettable aspects of the Playhouse rendition of Chicago.  The multitude of costumes are colorful, sometimes seductive, and always perfect for the scene.
