and son were at his side at Northern Inyo Hospital when he passed away Tuesday evening.

Bright was a big presence in his community of Independence and in the whole county and beyond. He and wife Jane, who preceded him in death, combined as a dynamic duo in the formation of their business ventures and care for their family.

Bright, a staunch Republican, liked to debate politics with locals and ascended to local political position when he won a seat on the Inyo Board of Supervisors in the 80s. He was outspoken, intelligent and determined.

His stern political views were softened by his ready smile and quick wit. He was always ready to joke and could laugh at himself, too.

His involvement with his community continued through the years and he could even be seen and heard leading the Independence Fourth of July crowd last year in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Keith Bright – an energetic man with firm views. He could switch gears into the philosophical. When the big Independence fire hit three years ago, followed by floods and mudslides, Bright’s Ranch and home of many years was wiped out. He spoke at public meetings in support of better emergency response. He was hopeful for the future, and at the same time he joked that after fires and floods, plague might be next for Independence.

Funeral services are pending for Keith Bright.
