Dr. James Richardson, Inyo County’s Public Health Officer, has been recently criticized in local news media and social media for a perceived lack of initiative in efforts to enforce county health orders on wearing of face masks and social distancing in local businesses.

With the recent closure last week through a court-ordered restraining order of a local business in Big Pine, there should be little doubt that Dr. Richardson and the County of Inyo are prepared to do what is necessary to do everything possible to help local businesses meet the health order guidelines because their purpose is not to punish businesses that are not in compliance, but when that fails, the county will act swiftly to shut that business or activity down in the interest of the public’s health, whether its business employees, residents or visitors.

Richardson explained that the enforcement process in Inyo County is not about punishing small businesses, but rather about seeking to support local business while also protecting the health care system and our residents and visitors.
