MARCH FOR THE EARTH: a Wish from the Heart for a Sustainable Future

A beautiful spring day, a good crowd, inspiring speeches, and the chance to do something to protect our beautiful blue planet — what could be better?

Some four hundred concerned people turned out to march in celebration of our Earth, the scientists who work to understand it, and the meaningful climate action needed to insure humanity’s ability to live sustainably on it.  The March was held in support of the international March for Science and the international People’s Climate March, and in the spirit of Earth Day.

The March organizers from INYO350, 350Mono and the Sierra Club would like to take this opportunity to thank retired fish biologist Phil Pister, Lee Vining High School student Caelen McQuilkin, and scientist Erik Leitch who all gave inspirational speeches encouraging the crowd to take action, stay informed and rise up to resist the erosion of environmental protections and scientific norms.

We would also like to thank all who helped in so many ways, especially the awesome sign painters, the crossing guards, the Zikomo Drummers, Sage Romero and the Payahuunadu Ribbon Dancers, and Rev. Caddy Jackson for the blessing.   Special thanks also to Dan Connor for the sound system.

Thank you also to the City of Bishop police officers and park staff.  Thank you to people for being patient as the March crossed their path.  Thanks to the drivers who honked in support.  Thanks to all the local scientists for all you do every day.

And lastly thanks to all who marched from far and wide, from Lone Pine to Bridgeport and beyond.  Thanks for your energy and your passion for clean air, clean water, sustainable living, renewable energy, environmental and social justice for all and a secure future for our children.  The joy and commitment you all brought was palpable.

We are blessed to live in a place with such a pristine environment and it is easy to take it for granted.  But it will take all of us standing up for a livable future; the encouragement, funding and utilization of science; and meaningful climate action to keep it this way.
