Local Man Reaches Summit of Everest

Kurt Wedberg of Bishop successfully reached the summit of Mt. Everest last Wednesday around 10am Nepal time. His father, John Wedberg, who happens to be our Jazz Show host, told us this was Kurt’s second successful climb to the highest mountain on the planet.

Wedberg said his son had left the South Col at 26,300 feet in elevation around midnight. He climbed with several other guides from International Mountain Guides, plus several of their Sherpas from the expedition.

Most of the climbers with Kurt returned all the way back down to Camp 2 at 21,000 feet after coming off the Everest summit. Kurt Wedberg may climb other mountains in the area, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. He was expected back down to the Everest Base Camp by now. His parents, John and Pat Wedberg of Bishop, are expecting a call via satellite phone soon.

John Wedberg said Kurt had promised to give an Everest slide show at Bishop High School Auditorium in October, a fundraiser for the Friendship Center.
