Inaugural Mammoth Half Marathon & 5K, a one-of-a-kind race and fundraising event with 100 percent of its net proceeds benefiting local causes, is set to take place this weekend, June 22 – 23, 2013, in Mammoth Lakes, California.

The half -marathon race is also the second leg of the San Diego – Mammoth Challenge. Finishers of both the San Diego Half Marathon, which took place on March 10th, and the Mammoth Half Marathon, will receive a special “Challenge” medal. the event is organized by the Mammoth Half Marathon, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, whose mission is to put on a premier running event while catalyzing volunteerism & fundraising as a way to benefit the local community and charities.

The half marathon starts at almost 9,000 feet above sea level at Horseshoe Lake, and features a breathtakingly scenic, mostly downhill, 13.1-mile course into downtown Mammoth. The 5K course will have runners of all ages & abilities and will use the last 3.1-miles of the half marathon course. Both races finish into the “Celebrate Mammoth Lakes” block party in downtown Mammoth, which includes live music, entertainment and a family fun zone. The block party is free and open to the public until 1pm.

“Our mission is to put on a premier race that both showcases & benefits the local community” said Susan Briggs, Executive Director of the Mammoth Half Marathon & 5K. “We are thrilled to bring our vision to life in Mammoth Lakes, and we will love seeing the community come together to volunteer & to cheer on participants.”

The weekend festivities include a Sport, Health & Fitness Expo to be held on Saturday, June 22 from 12pm to 8pm at the Village Lodge, where runners will pick up their race packets, and vendors will provide interactive demos and product samples. A limited number of bibs for both races will be available for sale at the Expo. The half marathon & 5K races will take place on Sunday, June 23, both starting at  7:30 am and finish into the Celebrate Mammoth Lakes Block Party from 7:30am to 12pm on Old Mammoth Road.

All residence of the Mammoth Lakes and surrounding communities are invited to show their support of all of the weekend’s activities in support of the 1,000 registered runners & their families. Over 98% of the participants are traveling from outside Mono County, creating a positive economic impact for the community in addition to the charitable causes.

– The following information is from Mammoth Police Chief Dan Watson:

The race will start at Horseshoe Lake at 7:30 and end on Old Mammoth Road in front of Rafter’s Restaurant. The course will travel down Lake Mary Road, through the Twin Lakes area, to Minaret. The runners will turn right on Minaret and then right again on Meridian up to the Juniper Springs Lodge area.

They will take the bike path across Mammoth Creek onto Sherwin and then down Old Mammoth Road to Fire Station 2 where they will get on the Bike Path. When they get to Minaret, they will cross to Meadow Rd and then back on the Bike Path. They will stay on the bike path, crossing Commerce, and back up to Sierra Park to Tavern to the finish line on Old Mammoth Road.

There will be temporary traffic disruptions during the time of the race. Lake Mary Road, Old Mammoth Road between Sherwin and Club Drive, Sierra Park and Tavern will be limited to one lane with a pilot car on Lake Mary. Minaret between Old Mammoth Road and Snowcreek Road will be closed completely until the last runners pass.

Old Mammoth Road from just south of Rite-Aid to just north of the Lutheran Church at Meridian will be closed until 4 pm. The race organizers have put together a large team of volunteers including members of the Mammoth Lakes CERT team and local residents who will be staffing various intersections. They will be stopping traffic and allowing vehicles to pass between runners.

Residents are encouraged to be patient and understanding with the minor traffic delays the race may cause. Be aware that Sunday morning traffic may be impacted and allow some extra time. And please cooperate with the volunteers and police officers who will be directing traffic. They are there to insure the safety of everyone.
