The driver died from injuries sustained in the wreck. He has now been identified as 33 year old Luis Robert-Lopez Pineda of Mammoth.

The CHP officer found that the driver and sole occupant of the 2003 Volkswagon Jetta had suffered major head and neck injuries. The officer performed CPR, but Mono Paramedics pronounced the man dead a short time later.

The CHP said the man was believed to have been driving eastbound on Benton Crossing Rd. at a high rate of speed and failed to negotiate a sweeping left curve in the road. The CHP said that alcohol is believed to have been a factor in this collision, pending an autopsy and toxicology exam results.
