US NEWS MANZANAR 2 OCWINTER HOURS OF OPERATION FOR

MANZANAR VISITOR CENTER

EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 1, 2014

Beginning Saturday, November 1, 2014, the Manzanar National Historic Site Visitor Center will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. “We are approaching our winter season and will be adjusting our hours of operation due to reduced public demand,” said Superintendent Bernadette Johnson. “Visitation declines as we move into cooler weather and shorter days, but we plan to extend our hours again in April,” she continued. The center is open every day, except December 25 and is a no fee site.

The Visitor Center features 8,000 square feet of exhibits, a 22-minute  award-winning introductory film, and a bookstore operated by the non-profit Manzanar History Association. A special photo exhibit, the “Colors of Confinement” photo exhibit featuring Bill Manbo’s historic color photos of Heart Mountain, Wyoming, is featured until February 2015. Additional buildings open to the public include a restored World War II-era mess hall with exhibits and two reconstructed barracks.

In addition to Visitor Center, a self-guided auto tour is available any time during daylight hours. Park rangers offer special programs throughout the year. Schools and groups may request program reservations by calling 760-878-2194, ext. 3333 at least 30 days in advance. More information is available on Manzanar’s web site at www.nps.gov/manz and on the site’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ManzanarNationalHistoricSite.
