The Inyo Supervisors have scheduled a public meeting in Lone Pine to discuss the possibility of additional Wilderness Designations in southern Inyo County.

At a past meeting, Supervisors Richard Cervantes and Linda Arcularius explained that a group called California Wilderness Coalition had approached Senator Dianne Feinsteins office with a request for additional Wilderness in southern Inyo County.

Cervantes said that most of the newly proposed Wilderness areas are near historic or active mining areas, including the Great Falls Basin near Trona, and an area in the Panamint Valley close to the Briggs Mine, including the Ratcliff Mine. Eureka Valley has been proposed as has the Malpais plateau across highway 136 from Keeler.

This new Wilderness proposal is in the very early stages and has not been introduced in Congress. Gil Duran with Senator Feinsteins office reports that the meeting Thursday is for informational purposes only. He explained that the Senator has not yet taken a position on this proposed Wilderness.

This meeting to discuss the California Wilderness Coalition proposal to Senator Feinstein is scheduled to start Thursday night at 6:00 pm at Statham Hall in Lone Pine.
