Mission Viejo man arrested for assault in June Lake

– Press release from Mono County Sheriff’s Office

On the morning of Sunday, July 5, 2015, at approximately 8:35am, the Mono County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center received a call regarding a possible assault with a firearm that occurred the previous night in the June Lake area.

Julian Wendell

On the evening of Saturday, July 4, 2015, at approximately10:00pm, Mr. Julian Wendell, age 30, of Mission Viejo, California, and a male and a female, both of June Lake, were involved in an altercation at their campsite in the June Lake area.

Mr. Wendell drove the male and the female to the campsite after spending some time in the Town of June Lake. During the drive to the campsite, Mr. Wendell was driving in an aggressive manner and was confronted by both the male and the female.

When they arrived at the campsite, Mr. Wendell became aggressive and pushed the female as they both exited the vehicle. The male met Mr. Wendell at the front of the vehicle where the two began to argue and got into a physical altercation. Mr. Wendell then went into his trailer and brought out a handgun. He hit the male in the head with the butt of the handgun.

Mr. Wendell then fired several rounds into the air. The male and the female were able to leave the campsite where the male was taken to Mammoth Hospital for treatment of his injuries and released. The Mono County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate the incident.

On the morning of Sunday, July 5, 2015, Mono County Sheriff’s deputies, with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, located Mr. Wendell and he was arrested without incident. Three firearms were recovered from Mr. Wendell’s trailer.

Julian Wendell, age 30, of Mission Viejo, California, was arrested for assault with a firearm on a person (245(a)(2) PC); willful infliction of corporal injury (273.5(a) PC); discharging a firearm in grossly negligent manner (246.3 PC); and drawing, exhibiting, or using firearm (417(a)(2) PC). He is currently in custody at the Mono County Jail. All charges for Mr. Wendell are pending with the Mono County District Attorney’s Office.

Well, Mr. Wendell, congratulations…you just flushed your life down the toilet. But even if you get some high-didge lawyer & you don’t go to prison for this…you will never again be able to own any kind of firearm, EVER ! And we’re ALL happy about that.

    • Joe July 8, 2015 at 5:56 am #

Yeah, Rick, we all know criminals follow the law and he will never have another firearm, ever. Sweet dreams.

      • Mark July 8, 2015 at 1:22 pm #

        Isn’t that the truth.

When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns.

With a hot head like that he very well could have been in trouble before and may already not be allowed to have a gun AND HAS ONE ANYWAY.

Well Joe, I should have said he’ll never be able to BUY another one over the counter in a legal manner. We all know crooks will always be able to get one, but if & when his case is concluded and he’s done his jail or prison time, if he EVER gets caught with a firearm or even ammo for a firearm, he’s looking at ANOTHER 4 years. To (most) people, that would be a pretty strong incentive.

Rick O’Brien….well said….No one can keep guns out of criminal’s hands,if they want to buy one…and THAT is what this Administration is trying to slow down…not the crazy right-wing chanting about how they’re trying to take EVERYONE’S guns away…I kind of like it to someone getting multiple DUI’s…..If they lose their licence to drive, some are still going to drive….but others won’t ,knowing the consequences if they do and get caught….making it safer for the law-abiding citizens….keeping as many habitual drunk drivers off the highway as possible….and keeping guns out of people’s hands that have no business owning a gun.The right-wing-nuts (and FOX NEWS) have tried to spin-it to where they want all guns taken from everyone, which isn’t true….only something to make-up and get all angry and mad about….which they crave for.

Oh Rick.. how you are wrong on all levels . Keep your negative comments to yourself .

Well said Rick. Sounds like he didn’t like being told to slow down.

  3. High Water July 8, 2015 at 12:10 pm #

Lol! Lol! Slow down. These are only Allegations. Not sure where we went wrong but in the U.S.A under the CONSTITUTION you are INNOCENT TILL PROVEN GUILTY.
We all have those rights I’d like to think that all of us should be grateful to have them.
but it seems some of us think it’s worthless!!!

Curiously, the Sheriff’s Press Release does not tell us how the unidentified “male and female” – both June Lake locals – found themselves inside Mr. Wendell’s vehicle, being driven to his campsite at 10 PM, nor how they had been “spending some time” in June Lake with him before then; nor what they all intended to do once at the campground.

However, since the Sheriff is not recommending kidnapping charges, it may be concluded the “male and female” did all this willingly.

Moreover, the Press Release states what allegedly happened as a matter of fact, as if the investigating officer had witnessed it, when in fact he/she did not arrive on the scene until the next morning; what the Sheriff states as fact is simply the complaining party’s version.

I’m not defending Mr. Wendell – maybe he is guilty as charged.

(He IS from Mission Viejo after all, as the Sheriff repeatedly tells us).

I’m just saying that Sheriff’s Press Releases often pursue a narrative at the expense of the whole story.

And therefore at some point become propaganda.

Well, In Mono County I’d say that you’re guilty until proven innocent. And if you are proven innocent, you’ll still carry the stigma around.

  7. High Water July 9, 2015 at 8:27 pm #

Well said Dee. There is always more to the story than an official press release from the cops. Then again our local law enforcement would never skew their narrative would they? That only happens in other places not here.

  8. Dee Tails July 10, 2015 at 8:34 am #

Come to think of it, why did the June Lake locals wait until 8:35 the next morning to call the Sheriff about an allegedly assaultive person shooting off a handgun in a 4th of July-weekend campground?

That sounds like a dangerous situation that should have been 911ed.

And if they didn’t, why did no other campers call in “shots fired”?

It appears in any event that Mammoth Hospital – not the June Lake locals – called the Sheriff about the “possible” assault the next morning.

Maybe the police should not be allowed to use the phrase press release?

  10. Trouble July 10, 2015 at 8:44 am #

On second thought, maybe the police should not be allowed to use the press.

I’m I the only that’s noticed this guy looks like they made the Anonymous Mask after him?

  12. Wendell May 25, 2016 at 11:38 am #

I’m just going to say , the press and police of mono county blew things up . And for the people who side with mono county .. You people judge before you hear the facts .. All is well and all has been forgiven .

    • Rick O'Brien May 25, 2016 at 8:05 pm #

WHY are you commenting on a story that’s almost a year old ?

      • Trouble May 26, 2016 at 1:51 pm #

Rick, I think he is the dude in the article. I’d like to hear his side of the story.

      • Wendell May 26, 2016 at 2:37 pm #

Because It’s a free country and I just got out of jail

        • Charles O. Jones May 27, 2016 at 4:24 pm #

Fair enough. Care to expound and how law enforcement and the press got it wrong? And was your recent time in jail related to this incident?

        • Rick O'Brien May 27, 2016 at 10:21 pm #

If I were you, Wendell, I’d stay away from booze this 4th of July (unless you want to go back)

    Good answer Wendell!

I am from mission viejo.. I was living in June lake on BLM land not a camp site . I had my .22 pistol bc living in bear country you need it to scare them away if pots n pans don’t work. The guy I was fighting with threw the first punch and was a boxing champ who was on xanax that night . I did push my woman friend to get out of the way while I was being attacked .. the guy didn’t stop so I went to my trailer and pulled my bear gun out and shot 3 shots in the air to scare and stop him . That did no good but make him more angry and throw more punches , so I did what I thought would stop him in his tracks .. pistol whip. I was right , it stopped him and then we talked and settled everything in a civil manner . My woman friend took him to the hospital to see if there was any major damage . The next day a local store owner in town heard about the fight and took it upon himself to call the police on me while I was at work . That’s what I get for protecting myself .. Liberals
