Bad news for peanut butter fans. Inyo-Mono Public Health Officer Dr. Rick Johnson recommends that you do not eat products that contain peanut butter, for now.dr_johnson_heat.jpg

Dr. Johnson reports that the Centers for Disease control, California public health officials and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating a multi-state outbreak of human infections caused by Salmonella.

As of a few days ago, 474 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from 43 states since September, with over 60 cases in California and 5 in Nevada. 107 were hospitalized and infection may have led to 6 deaths.

It's important to note that to date no major national brand name of peanut butter has been linked to the Salmonella outbreak.

Products that are suspected include frozen Peanut Butter Cookie Dough and King Nut Creamy Peanut Butter. Dr. Johnson says that the list of products that may be affected by Salmonella is still being determined and is incomplete at this time.

Dr. Johnson added today that two fundraisers at Mammoth schools have been selling peanut butter containing products. The products have not been specifically recalled, but since the list changes rapidly, Dr. Johnson recommends a halt in sales and postponement of eating any product sold.

The bottom line today – Dr. Johnson recommends that you do not eat peanut butter containing products even though major national brand name jars of peanut butter sold commercially in grocery stores have not been implicated.

Our health officer also recommends removal of all peanut products from school cafeterias and vending machines as a precaution.

Check out the products list on the FDA website. www.fda.gov for a complete list of recalled products containing peanut butter.
