At Shady Rest Campground in Mammoth Lakes – new rules. The Forest Service will enforce rules that dog owners must clean up after their pets and must keep them on a leash in developed recreation sites.

Cleland Hoff talked to Shelley Murrell of the Forest Service who said that while the Town of Mammoth has a leash law, so does the Forest Service.

Ms. Murrell said there were a fair number of complaints about dogs last year, so the Forest Service decided to enforce the rules.

Murrell explained that regulations apply in developed recreation sites only, which include parking lots, campgrounds, groomed trails and staging areas. Off the trails and out in the woods – the rules don’t apply.

The Forest Service does have the personnel available to enforce these rules, so be forewarned that you might have to pay a fine if you fail to leash your dog or clean up after your pet at Shady Rest.
