Owens Valley Indian Water Commission Awards $100,000 to the Big Pine Paiute

Tribe of Owens Valley to Repair and Upgrade the Tribe’s Irrigation System

Owens Valley Indian Water Commission  is pleased to announce the Commission awarded the Big Pine Tribe a $100,000 Agriculture Assistance Grant torepair segments of the Tribe’s irrigation system to ensure tribal members have access to water for agricultural and general purposes.

Alan Bacock, Water Program Coordinator for the Big Pine Tribe states, “the current
irrigation system is outdated”. This grant will enable the tribe to replace two cleanouts on
Crater Street and Richards Street which are in desperate need of repair due to leaks and
safety concerns The funds will also be used in conjunction with other funds to install four
valves on the irrigation mainline near the two new standpipes which will assist with the
movement of water in the system making it more efficient.

This funding was made available through the Native American Agriculture Fast Track
Funding stemming from the Keepseagle v. Vilsack lawsuit settlement.
