The LA Times featured Mammoth Lakes on the cover of the Sunday Travel section.

The headline in the Los Angeles Times said it all for Mammoth Lakes – “Healing Power of Snow.” And, it sure doesn’t hurt to capture the cover story on the Sunday Times Travel section.

Writer Christopher Reynolds spelled it all out for Mammoth. His story lead says, “Before we get to the early snow, the new businesses, the zipping skiers and beaming boarders at Mammoth Lakes, let’s remember how bad things have been this year for this corner of the Eastern Sierra.” Okay. He got that right.

The story lists the bad stuff – scant snow last winter, low tourism, the June Mountain shutdown, ski area layoffs, and then bankruptcy. The Times story lays out the hard days for Mammoth and June Lakes but then says, “Yet the winter of 2012-2013 has begun in Mammoth Lakes with a happy bang, because nothing dilutes red ink faster than real snow.” True enough.

The following paragraphs reveal the great news of storm after storm and a base of four to six feet. The LA Times writer shared his personal experiences. He liked the bar at the Westin Monache and the food at Toomey’s. He named traditions like boarders at Lakanuki Bar, locals at Roberto’s Cafe and the new Black Velvet Coffee. He mentioned Bleu Handcrafted Foods too.

The article talks about new stuff like an Italian restaurant, Campo Mammoth, expected to open December 20 in the former Hyde Club space and a new Greek restaurant above the Red Lantern – Jimmy’s Taverna.

On the government side of town, the LA Times mentions the cut, nearly in half, of the Mammoth Police Department but no raise in bed tax. The writer quotes people praising summer business and crying the blues about no ski area in June Lake but hope that Mammoth Mountain promised to re-open it in 2013-2014.
