Inyo County Clerk Kammi Foote conducted the first two civil wedding ceremonies in the County Clerk’s office recently. One of the same-sex couples was Belinda Maria Crnich and Charity Ann Winsor. The women told Clerk Foote that they came to Independence to get married because of the significance of the name of the town to their special day.
Also, the second couple married in the Clerk’s office was Wayne Myers Hume and Eugene Donovan. They have been together for 26 years.
Both couples agreed to sharing their special day with local media. These marriages follow a decision last month by the California Supreme Court to deny the Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriages. This ruling followed the U.S. Supreme Court’s order – also against Proposition 8.
Miongo shut up!
Way to go Independence and Inyo County! Any small-minded assumptions some readers may have of a tiny, California town, just flew out the window.
I always thought of small towns as gay hot spots.
Small towns are more bisexual, improves the chance of getting a date.
Homophobia is alive and well in Inyo County.
Exactly my thoughts.. Just who are these people that are so upset with what others do? They need to go mow their yard and clean up their front yard.
A busybody – do-gooder, meddler or marplot, someone who meddles in the affairs of others.
The more I sincerely try to understand the thinking process of a busybody – the more I am confused. I suppose the most unhappy of us must find some way to vent.
Now that we see the tide turning in favor of civil liberties in a area where fundamentalist thinkers and conservatives have a majority here (inyo county), I wonder what stance or belief is next, for the trend for people to think for themselves and question the established powers and understanding… Read more »
You missed it by a mile. There are libertarian conservatives (e.g., Cato Institute) as well as libertarian leftists. And there are plenty of leftists who are anything but libertarian. With the Industrial Age top-down federal-government-knows-and-does-everything approach of the Obama administration, I would have thought you might have gotten it. Did… Read more »
Can one ever be on the wrong side of history or only wrong side of self in this moment? Does one fill in the blanks to avoid expanding into their being, to limit knowledge of their birthright to light and to darkness? How does one truly close any door without… Read more »
“Cheer up, things may better than we all think”
This is very true for most of us.
But since virtually EVERYTHING is politics today, those from the extreme Right are guaranteeing a Democratic White House for … who knows when?
The mind is like a parachute – it functions best when it’s open.
Really Tourbillion? I missed it by a mile? Maybe we all and including yourself should take your own advice into consideration to integrate it within our own lives. For everything we ever know or come across is interpreted through a Ideological lens, whether that be the reader or the writer.… Read more »
Again, you are missing the flip side of the record. When our human consciousness expands and emerges faster than our institutions it weakens the institutions which then resort to claiming power. The fact that they have to resort to claiming and exercising power is a sign of people awakening and… Read more »
What a person does is his OWN business. What he does might seem peculiar to us, but it does NOT seem peculiar to him. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view. Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.… Read more »
You might try this when it comes to your relentless criticism of certain officials.

Some have walked in and/or been trampled by the shoes they criticize.
I could care less what adults do in private. But I do not think our gov’t should be telling my kids their beliefs.
Hmmm –
The same could be said about organized religion.
Good for these people finding true love in their lives….even if it does make some angry people angrier-er…..
Our friends and neighbors who lose sleep over same-sex relationships are entitled to think what they want on this subject, and they’re entitled to full respect for their opinions on the subject. But before they can live with other friends and neighbors (especially in small, rural communities) they’ve got to… Read more »
You’re half-right…they have the right to think it, but they are not entitled to our automatic respect for their opinion.
Bemused –
We MUST have respect for their opinion –
otherwise we become just like them.
Wow Bennet. Admittedly, my apparently deleted follow-up response to this was rather snarky…but no more so than that which we see here constantly.
If you don’t see things our way – you are a bad American.
Awesome I totaly support this, and congrats to the new couple However, what bothers me is that the populous voted against it, and in our society that should mean something. Our legislators and judges are ruling against the will of the people. While most with common sense will agree with… Read more »
Populous also agrees to a judicial system….
Only fair way to settle this is to outlaw all marriages.
Wait, all you have hit the red thumbs down…..does this mean you are against the marriage because this is a same sex couple? Or, am I missing something?
I’d say you’re not missing much. Around here we pride ourselves in being libertarian (lower case l), until it actually applies to someone else’s liberty. Figure some people won’t come out and say these marriages disturb them, and some are saying what won’t be printed by SW.
We will publish comments that say you are disturbed. But we are not interested in homophobic rhetoric.
Benett Kessler
I am disturbed, yet not about this..
I am disturbed that government is so deep in our personal lives.
I recall a conversation with my older brother re: the subject of same-sex couples marrying. Same parents. Same lower-middleclass background. Same parochial education. Same everything … except for the different point of view. After a heated discussion, my brother’s final words on the subject were this: “IT’S WRONG!” And there… Read more »

Congrats, Now This Is Progress 🙂
Government shouldn’t care what your sexual preference is, they should screw everyone equally.
IRS ruled quickly that same sex marriage will be treated equally.
Awesome, great news! Congratulations!!
This is great. Congratulations!
Congratulations!
That’s excellent news and congratulations!
Unbelievable !
No matter how bitter things may get over this, these people are still our friends and this is still our home. Even if things might turn ugly we must all keep our heads. Why reasonable people go stark raving mad over things such as this is something I don’t pretend… Read more »
Many thanks to the Sierra Wave news staff for sharing this wonderful story. I never thought I’d ever see the day when 2 people regardless of gender could be married in the full light of the law. And in Independence, no less. Phil Tevlin
