Bishop Police Chief Kathleen Sheehan reports that William Downey, the man hit by a car on Main Street Bishop on Friday, remains in serious but stable condition in Reno.

A Bishop Police Officer on scene explained that the victim was crossing Main Street in the crosswalk at the Giggle Springs gas station. An 84 year old man from Big Pine, driving a white sedan, hit Downey in the crosswalk. The windshield of the white sedan was crushed and pushed in by the victims body, which then landed in front of the vehicle.

The male victim, 62 year old William Downey suffered serious head and neck injuries. Downey was taken to Northern Inyo Hospital and later flown to Reno. Chief Sheehan says that Downey has undergone multiple surgeries. Chief Sheehan reports that Adult Protective Services had to be called out to help with Downey’s wife, who is currently bed ridden.

The driver, Donald Nikolaus, was unhurt, though visibly distraught over the accident. He has been charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
