The Silver Peaks affordable-housing project is nearing the end of the first step.
That’s a more electrifying lead than it sounds. It’s taken ten years to get to this point.
The project, located at McIver and Spruce, will provide 70 units of affordable housing,
divided into one-, two- and three-bedroom units. The late Bishop City Manager Jim Tatum and
Inyo/Mono Advocates for Community Action finalized the purchase of the 3-acre parcel from
the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power a year ago. The City partnered with IMACA
since the Department required the sale be made to a government entity.
IMACA’s Housing and Planning Director Larry Emerson secured a low-interest loan of
$800,000 for the purchase of the land. Visionary Home Builders of California, a Stockton-based
company specializing in affordable housing projects, is currently securing the balance of the
funding to cover the purchase price of $1,091,000.
Emerson anticipated escrow would be closed by the end of 2020. Visionary will manage
the completed project and will continue its partnership with IMACA.

A little frustrating, too bad the USFS can’t or won’t sell property in or around Mammoth for the same reason, much easier said than done, for sure.
