With warm temperatures and high humidity hampering snowmaking on Mammoth Mountain, there had been talk of a delayed opening day at the ski area. Die hard snow fans can breathe easier. Mammoth staff announced that opening day will commence as scheduled – Thursday, November 8th.

On Monday staff at the mountain gathered to confer on the situation. The decision: no delay for opening day.

With some real snow on the mountain, conditions will look better than last year, but the runs will be limited again to Broadway.

Even with modern snowmaking techniques, the weather has to cooperate with cold temperatures and low humidity.

In an interview last Friday, Mammoth Mountain CEO Rusty Gregory explained that snowmaking crews have been working hard but sub-optimal conditions have only allowed for a few hours of snowmaking a night. Gregory also said that crews only need one good, cold day and they could open as planned.

Now it looks like the work has paid off. Ski Area staff reports that they will open Broadway Express at 8:30am Thursday morning with an 8 to 14 inch base. Lift tickets will be $35 for adults until more terrain is accessible, according to staff.
