Sybil Dewey Summers passed away peacefully in her Bishop home on January 22, 2016. Her last days were spent in the company of daughters Lysa Eldridge and Laurel Monahan, grandson Dustin Eldridge, and loving caregivers Tina Wales and Notty.

Sybil was born to Bates and Gladys Dewey on November 19, 1926, in Bakersfield, California. She attended Bakersfield High School and the University of Southern California. On March 23, 1947, she married Verne Summers, and they settled in Bridgeport, California, where they lived until moving to Bishop in 1952. Sybil and Verne raised their four children in Bishop, where they were active in community affairs, including participation with a collection of local friends in the development of the Bishop Country Club.

Sybil and Verne loved to travel, and welcomed adventure. They also shared a love for entertaining family and friends, and preparing the exotic cuisine they experienced in their travels. Memories of Rose Bowl parties (USC), at their home on Highland Drive, still linger in the minds of their many friends and other guests. In her later years, Sybil retained her passion for travel and took frequent excursions with her children. She also enjoyed dining adventures with a group of friends who jokingly referred to themselves as “The Steel Magnolias.” Sybil was a longtime supporter of the Laws Railroad Museum, and was active for many years in the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary.

Sybil was preceded in death by her husband the Honorable Verne Summers, daughter Lynn Summers, son Lloyd Summers, and son-in-law Sherman Eldridge. She is survived by daughter and son- in- law Laurel and David Monahan of La Jolla, California, daughter Lysa Eldridge and her friend Will Richmond of Bishop, grandchildren Coral Clay of Pacific Grove, California, Dustin Eldridge and his wife Alissa, of Susanville, California, Chris Eldridge and his wife Heidi of Bishop, and Staci Eldridge and her husband Jeff Aukee, of Bishop, along with several wonderful great grandchildren.

There will be a Celebration of Life in honor of Sybil Summers, in Bishop on a date to be determined. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to the Laws Railroad Museum.
