More today on the major construction project underway in Mammoth Lakes – the building of a new bridge and tunnel over Lake Mary Road.

As we reported yesterday, crews are at work removing old concrete foundations so they can form a new foundation, starting Wednesday. Additionally, steel parts for the new bridge are expected to arrive next week and crews will work double shifts, 6am to 10pm, to get the bridge built in 10 days or less.

The Town will re-post the electronic message board just east of Old Mammoth Road and Main Street to detour traffic to Old Mammoth Road for access to the Lakes Basin. Town officials say they will keep Old Mammoth Road open through Mill City until the Lake Mary Road is re-opened. The route, however, is not recommended for vehicles over 30 feet, especially when the road is icy. Access through the road closure will accommodate emergency vehicles only.

Mammoth Mountain Ski Area wants to have the new bridge and tunnel in place before Thanksgiving when Eagle Lodge will open up. The tunnel collapsed for a still unknown reason the evening of October 10th.
