On Friday, July 12, 2014, at approximately 2:09 P.M., Mr. Mark Huffman, age 54, of Lebanon, Ohio, was riding his BMW motorcycle westbound on State Route 108, west of the United States Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center.  Mr. Huffman was unable to negotiate the curved roadway, crossed double yellow lines and traveled into the eastbound (oncoming) traffic lane.  Mr. Huffman’s motorcycle collided head-on with a Chevy Tahoe driven by Mr. Matthew Gilmore, age 44, of Soulsbyville, California.  Mr. Huffman was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on the hood of the Chevy.  California Highway Patrol, Mono County Fire/Paramedic Rescue and the Mono County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene.  Mr. Huffman was transported by ground ambulance to Carson Valley Medical Center in Gardnerville, Nevada for minor injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates the speed of the motorcycle may have been a factor.

On Saturday, July 12, 2014, at approximately 11:33 A.M., California Highway Patrol (CHP) Bishop Communications Center received a report of a bicycle versus parked vehicle collision on US-395, south of Hot Creek Hatchery Road.  Two CHP officers from the Mammoth Lakes Resident Post responded to the scene.  The bicycle rider, Mr. Bruce Bartlett, age 57, of Mammoth Lakes, California, was located at the scene being attended to by witnesses.  A preliminary investigation revealed Mr. Bartlett was riding closely behind another rider while looking down and failed to observe a white Ford Ranger parked ahead on the right shoulder.  Mr. Bartlett attempted to take evasive action but was unable to avoid colliding with the parked vehicle.  The impact from the collision caused Mr. Bartlett to be ejected from his bicycle.  The bicycle continued out into the traffic lanes where it was struck by a passing Dodge Ram driven by Mr. Ernest Kelly, age 66, of Bishop, California.

Thankfully, Mr. Bartlett was wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the collision.  Mr. Bartlett sustained minor injuries in the collision and was taken by friends to Mammoth Hospital.
