Mono County Library Community Read 2014: Mono, by David Carle
Between 1934 and 1941, the City of Los Angeles sent 2,000 men to work on aqueducts and an 11-mile tunnel beneath volcanic craters in the Mono Lake Basin of the Eastern Sierra.  MONOtells the story of fish biologist Justin Hearth, as he surveys the waters of the Mono Lake watershed. Justin falls in love with the landscape, and also with Alisa Stohler, whose family, having been forced from their land in the Owens Valley, is now caught up in the changes brought by Los Angeles’ unending thirst for growth.  MONO confronts the question, What were they thinking?, as choices were made that endangered Mono Lake and its tributary streams.  Click HERE for a full schedule of events.

In 1941, the Los Angeles DWP began diverting water from Mono Lake’s tributary streams, sending it 350 miles south to Los Angeles. Deprived of its freshwater sources, the lake dropped 45 vertical feet. Its salinity doubled and the ecosystem approached collapse.  Film followed by Q&A with Emma Oschrin of the Mono Lake Committee.  29 minutes.  FREE.
