Wildland fire near Shady Rest Park

Mammoth Lakes Fire Dept. and USFS responded to a wildland fire near Shady Rest Park this morning shortly after 10 a.m.

The fire was less than 1/4 acre and was quickly contained.  The fire was “man” caused and the result of an illegal and abandoned campfire.  The small campsite was not part of a regular campground.

MLFD and USFS wants to emphasize that the Mammoth Lakes area as well as all of Mono County are experiencing extreme fire danger conditions.  Fires through out California and Nevada have caused a significant drain on firefighting resources.

We ask the public to be extra vigilant.  First be very careful with fire, campfires are only allowed in established campgrounds.  Second, if you see suspicions activity such as what appears to be an illegal campfires, please report it to the fire department.

I see people camping illegally quite often in the Shady Rest area I call USFS law enforcement when the camping goes beyond car camping, hibachi, tents campfires etc. however more often than not much is ever done. There was concealed campsite with a tent and at least two dogs for at least a month earlier this summer. I called the USFS law enforcement lady but the tent remained for weeks. Only until recently did the illegal camper(s) pick up and leave.
I understand some individuals will disregard any and all signage but the signage that is out there indicating “restricted camping next two miles” is poorly placed, even though its a very large black and white sign its easy to miss.

when I travel to other areas where there is USFS land near a town, I expect to be able to pull in somewhere in the forest and sleep in the back of my truck…I wouldn’t do a fire though..but I would heat up water in the am for coffee! I’d much rather sleep in the back of my truck then in a divey motel….and decent motels cost too much.
