Mammoth Lakes Fire Dept. and USFS responded to a wildland fire near Shady Rest Park this morning shortly after 10 a.m.
The fire was less than 1/4 acre and was quickly contained. The fire was “man” caused and the result of an illegal and abandoned campfire. The small campsite was not part of a regular campground.
MLFD and USFS wants to emphasize that the Mammoth Lakes area as well as all of Mono County are experiencing extreme fire danger conditions. Fires through out California and Nevada have caused a significant drain on firefighting resources.
We ask the public to be extra vigilant. First be very careful with fire, campfires are only allowed in established campgrounds. Second, if you see suspicions activity such as what appears to be an illegal campfires, please report it to the fire department.
